Breaking barriers in mental health: an inside look at Archway Community Services

Highlighting members

The work of community social service organizations often goes unseen, yet the impact they have on individuals, families and communities is profound. At Archway Community Services, the impact is felt daily, particularly within their Counselling, Child, Youth & Family Services programs. Shairose Jinnah, MA, the Executive Director for Programs and Services, shares the challenges, successes and aspirations of her team's work in supporting the mental health of Abbotsford residents.

Navigating challenges in the community social services sector

"For so much of what we do in this sector, sustainable long-term funding continues to be both a challenge and a priority," Jinnah explains. "Working off one-time grants and piecemealing together counselling programs leaves both staff and clients vulnerable to program closures."

This uncertainty in funding creates instability, not just for the organization but for those who rely on its services. The inconsistency also affects staff retention, as wages in the non-profit sector often struggle to compete with those in government or private practice. "We try to compensate with benefits, training and more clinical supervision," Jinnah says. "But in an economy that is volatile, where people are struggling with housing and food security, it is difficult to compete."

Despite these financial hurdles, Archway remains committed to providing essential mental health services, ensuring that those who cannot afford private counselling still receive the support they need.

A story of impact

While challenges persist, the successes of Archway's programs speak for themselves.

"There's no greater reward than seeing a young person who came to us struggling with trauma and mental health challenges find their voice and confidence," Jinnah shares. "I think of a client who, after months of therapy, was able to rebuild trust. Seeing that transformation reminds us why we do this work."

Another client came to Archway at a point where they were unable to function in any meaningful way — overwhelmed by trauma, struggling with mental health and unable to meet even their basic needs. Through counselling, they not only received the therapeutic support they needed but also accessed other essential Archway programs that provided stability, resources and a path forward. Over time, they regained their footing, became more engaged with their children and, most importantly, began to feel good about themselves again.

Through the dedication of its counsellors and the support of community partners, Archway continues to create these success stories — one client at a time.

The power of collaboration

Partnerships play a crucial role in Archway's ability to serve the community. "Many of our referrals for counselling come from community partners, including Fraser Health, Peardonville House, Lookout Society, Ministry of Children and Family Development and Fraser Valley Aboriginal Child, Youth and Family Services, as well as local schools," Jinnah explains. These collaborations ensure that individuals in need are connected to the appropriate services in a timely manner.

The Federation of Community Social Services of BC (the Federation) also plays a key role in supporting Archway's mission. "The Federation's continued advocacy for the importance of mental health services, especially for those who cannot afford counselling, is incredibly valuable," Jinnah says. Having a collective voice pushing for systemic changes strengthens the ability of non-profits like Archways to provide ongoing, accessible care.

Advice for the next generation of leaders

Having worked extensively in the sector, Jinnah understands the pressures facing executive directors and the leadership team. Her advice? "Sometimes you must take the risk to start an initiative without secured longer-term funding, and it puts you in a position when funding becomes available."

She also emphasizes the need for adaptability. "Continue to review and revise. Many projects and programs change and morph to reflect the demographics... and these can change quickly. Do not be afraid to change the model."

In an ever-evolving field, remaining flexible and responsive to community needs is essential for long-term success.

Looking ahead: goals and future plans

Mental health and counselling remain at the forefront of Archway's strategic planning. "Our goal is to work towards sustainable funding to support Abbotsford residents and provide a competitive wage for counsellors," Jinnah says. In addition to financial stability, Archway is committed to exploring innovative ways to support clients, families and staff.

A major focus for the upcoming years is raising awareness about mental health needs — particularly trauma-based care. "We want to continue to raise awareness at community tables and collectively seek solutions to address the increase in mental health needs," Jinnah emphasizes.

How the community can help

While organizations like Archway work tirelessly to support individuals in need, the role of the wider community cannot be understated. "Sharing best practices and collaborating when there are opportunities makes a difference," Jinnah says. By working together, organizations, funders and individuals can strengthen the mental health support network across the province.

As the sector transitions to a new generation of leadership, stories like those from Archway Community Services serve as powerful reminders of the work being done — and the work that still lies ahead. With continued advocacy, collaboration and community support, agencies can create lasting change, ensuring community social services remain accessible for all who need them.
